How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of spare audi key -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 audi keys replacement and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). 4. ECU
