How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are different connector pins, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, but i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that check here i might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor.
